Patterns and Colors

Most stamped jobs start with a pattern family: random or ashlar stone, slate, cobble, brick, or wood plank. Color goes in two layers. A base color is mixed into the concrete or broadcast onto the surface, and a contrasting release is dusted on before stamping so the low spots read darker and the high spots lighter. That two-tone shading is what keeps stamped work from looking like gray concrete with lines pressed in it. Borders in a second pattern or color, such as a smooth band around a stone field, frame a patio and hide the transition to the house or yard. We bring pattern and color samples to the site visit, so you can see them against your stucco, trim and landscaping before anything is ordered.

Where Stamped Concrete Works Best

Patios and courtyards are the most common use, followed by front walks, entries and driveway borders. Stamped driveways are possible too; HomeGuide prices them at $8 to $26 per square foot, compared with $6 to $15 for a standard driveway. Around pools, a lighter color and a finer texture stay cooler underfoot and give better grip than a deep stone pattern. Steps and landings can be stamped to match the patio so the whole back of the house reads as one surface.

Stamping in Dry Desert Air

Stamping happens in a short window: after the surface can hold an impression and before it gets too stiff to take one. Low humidity, wind and strong sun shorten that window. The City of Rio Rancho's concrete specifications list exactly those conditions, along with high air and concrete temperatures, as "hot weather" that speeds up moisture loss in fresh concrete. That's why we staff stamped pours heavier than plain slabs, start summer pours early in the day, and keep the surface from drying out while the crew works the pattern.

What It Costs

HomeGuide's national 2026 range for a stamped concrete patio is $8 to $19 per square foot, or $3,200 to $7,600 for a 20-by-20-foot patio. Price moves with the pattern, the number of colors, borders, steps, tear-out and how much base work the site needs. Your written quote lists those items separately.

Keeping the Color

Sealer is what keeps stamped concrete looking like stone. It deepens the color, slows stains and protects the surface from water and sun. HomeGuide's guidance is to reseal stamped concrete every 2 to 3 years. See concrete sealing for how we handle that. If you already have a plain slab that's sound but boring, a stamped overlay may be an option instead of a tear-out; see concrete resurfacing and overlays.
