Concrete Contractor Bernalillo NM - Driveways, Patios & Commercial Concrete in the Town of Bernalillo

Concrete in Bernalillo goes into one of the oldest towns in New Mexico.

Bernalillo was founded in 1695, is the Sandoval County seat, and grew up along the Rio Grande and the old Camino Real. Today that history sits next to new subdivisions, businesses along Camino del Pueblo and US 550, and homes that need driveways, patios and repairs like anywhere else.

Note: the Town of Bernalillo is in Sandoval County. It isn't the same place as Bernalillo County, which includes Albuquerque.

Who Issues Permits in Bernalillo

Bernalillo splits the job between the Town and the State. The Town's Planning and Zoning Department, at 829 S. Camino del Pueblo, (505) 771-7118, handles zoning and floodplain review, and permits for walls, fences, signs, carports, sheds and demolition. Building permits, trade permits and all inspections are issued by the New Mexico Construction Industries Division on the Town's behalf. According to the Town:

  1. Structures under 120 square feet (carports, sheds, gazebos) need a Town Placement Permit before construction.
  2. Larger structures need a CID building permit, and Town staff review and sign the application before it goes to CID; the Town's review generally takes 2 to 3 days.
  3. A Floodplain Development Permit may be required, and staff will contact you if your property needs one.

For a pad under a new shed or carport, that means the Placement Permit comes before the concrete. For a garage or larger building, the slab follows the CID permit and its inspections.

Flood Zones and Drainage

Bernalillo lies in the Rio Grande Valley on the east bank of the river. The Town manages floodplain permits and stormwater quality for construction sites, which is why floodplain review is part of every building permit. For flatwork, that comes down to grading: driveways and patios should send water to where the site plan says it goes, not toward the house or onto a neighbor. On commercial sites, construction stormwater controls may be part of the job.

Ground and Weather

The soils in the Rio Grande Valley vary from river sand to clay to fill. The New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources notes that collapsible soils, which compact when they get wet, are common in New Mexico, and roof runoff is one of the triggers. We dig out soft material and compact the base on every pour. Winter nights drop below freezing, so exterior concrete is air-entrained, an approach the American Concrete Pavement Association says helps concrete resist freeze-thaw damage and deicer scaling.

Commercial Concrete Along Camino del Pueblo and US 550

Restaurants, shops, offices and service businesses in Bernalillo need walks, entries, parking areas and dumpster pads that hold up. Sites where a driveway connects to a state highway need an NMDOT access permit as part of the site work; we'll flag it at the start. See concrete parking lots.

Local Landmarks We Work Around

Customers often describe where they are by what's nearby: Coronado Historic Site and the Kuaua Pueblo ruins off US 550, the Rail Runner station, Camino del Pueblo, or the grounds where the New Mexico Wine Festival is held every Labor Day weekend. Knowing the town helps us plan truck access, timing and parking for a pour.

Small Pads and Big Jobs

For shed, hot tub, AC and generator pads, see concrete pads. If the shed is under 120 square feet, remember the Town Placement Permit.
