Concrete Pads Rio Rancho NM - Shed, Hot Tub, AC Unit & Generator Pads

Concrete pads in Rio Rancho give sheds, hot tubs, mini-splits, AC condensers, generators and water heaters a flat, solid base that won't sink into the yard.

They're small pours, but they get the same prep as a big slab.

Shed Pads

A shed on blocks or bare dirt racks out of square as the ground moves, and the doors start to stick. A concrete pad keeps the floor level and keeps rodents and moisture out from underneath. We size the pad a little larger than the shed footprint, set anchor points if the shed needs tying down, and slope it slightly so water sheds away. Rio Rancho requires a permit for secondary structures of 121 square feet and over, so larger sheds and workshops go through the City; a small shed may not, and we'll flag which side of that line yours falls on.

Hot Tub and Spa Pads

A filled hot tub with people in it is a heavy, concentrated load. Angi notes that a standard patio is typically 4 inches thick, but a slab that supports a hot tub or outdoor kitchen should be increased to 6 to 8 inches to carry the weight and resist cracking. The City of Rio Rancho lists swimming pools, hot tubs and spas among projects that need a permit, so the spa itself has its own permit even if the pad doesn't. We plan the pad around the electrical run, the access panel side and drainage when the tub is emptied.

AC, Mini-Split and Generator Pads

Condensers and standby generators need a level base at the right height, with clearance around them. We pour equipment pads to the unit's footprint and the installer's clearance needs, set them above grade so water doesn't pond under the unit, and coordinate with your HVAC or electrical installer on conduit or line-set openings.

Prep Is the Same, Big or Small

Every pad starts with digging out soft topsoil and roots, compacting a base, and setting forms square and level. Small pads fail for the same reason big slabs do: loose ground underneath. Collapsible soils, which settle when they get wet, are common in New Mexico according to the New Mexico Bureau of Geology and Mineral Resources, and pads often sit near roof drip lines and sprinklers. A compacted base and positive drainage are cheap insurance.

Add a Pad to a Bigger Job

Every concrete truck and crew trip has a minimum cost, so a small pad is often far cheaper when it rides along with a patio, walk or driveway pour. If you're planning other work, mention the pad at the same time.
